Texas Tech University has been recognized as a 2015 Military Friendly School® for the sixth straight year by Victory Media Inc., a veteran-owned business, dedicated to surveying thousands of institutions across the nation for best practices with military personnel.
“Texas Tech works hard toward reaching out and serving our military personnel, veterans and their families, and it is something we will continue to do,” said Texas Tech President M. Duane Nellis. “We are excited to receive this recognition again and are proud of the service these great men and women have done for this nation.”
Every year Victory Media Inc. surveys more than 10,000 veteran affairs approved schools across the nation and bases their rankings among 11 different categories:
- Military support on campus
- Academic credibility
- Percent of military students
- Academic credit for military service
- Flexibility for military students
- Veteran graduation rates
- Student tuition assistance
- Student survey
- Employment rates
- Military spouse policies
- Government approvals
Of the 10,000+ schools surveyed, the top 20 percent that provide the most assistance to America’s military service members, veterans and their families, are then designated as a Military Friendly School®.
President Nellis said Texas Tech will always work hard to reach out and serve military personnel, veterans and their families.

We go above and beyond to ensure that they get the honor and respect that they have earned from serving this great nation.”
Texas Tech’s Military and Veterans Programs (MVP) has served more than 1,800 veterans and dependents of veterans since its beginning. The program assists veterans and their families in achieving academic and personal success by providing a seamless transition from military to civilian life. MVP provides direct assistance at Texas Tech, including the application process, financial aid (GI Bill and State-Hazlewood Act), registering for classes and assistance throughout each student’s college career.
“Texas Tech has done a remarkable job ensuring that our programs and services for veterans and military dependents are second to none in the country,” said Juan Muñoz, senior vice president for Institutional Diversity, Equity and Community Engagement and vice provost for Undergraduate Education and Student Affairs. “In particular, the success of our Military and Veterans Programs office and the efforts through individual colleges and support units make certain that our veterans succeed. Texas Tech has been continuously recognized for its effort to support veterans that attend the university, and we will continue to raise the bar every year.”
Military and Veterans Programs has been recognized by esteemed military and veteran organizations for the work done for military service members, including Texas Tech becoming the first Purple Heart University in Texas and ranked as a “Best for Vets” college by Military Times. Recently Texas Tech was ranked 47th for Best College for Veterans by U.S. News and World Report.
