Spotify, the online music service, has tallied its own customers to determine which colleges listen to the most music and what styles they prefer.
For example, Texas Tech University in Lubbock — No. 6 on the nationwide Top 40 — listens to more Justin Bieber songs than any other school in the country. It’s also fond of Randy Rogers Band and Ska Punk but ranks lowest among the top 40 when it comes to folk music.
In the survey, the number-crunchers looked for schools with the highest rates of students who signed up for Spotify’s discounted premium package last semester, “because that plan appeals to students who love music.”
The results are surprising, to say the least. According to Spotify, the most musical university in America is California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. It’s fond of reggae music and the artist Flume but really dislikes pop star Ariana Grande.
Others in the top five are:
No. 2. Iowa State University, Ames, which is fond of Floorfillers (a series of albums compiling various tracks) and the trance music genre, among others;
No. 3. University of California, Los Angeles, which likes future garage dance-style music and the rock band Boyce Avenue;
No. 4. University of North Texas, Denton, where students like the chillwave genre but can’t stand blues or classic rock;
No. 5. University of Washington, Seattle, where electro and baroque are popular, but Christian music and Luke Bryan are not.
Among Texas schools, the highest ranking on Spotify’s list is the University of North Texas at Denton, at No. 4. Close behind at No. 6 is Texas Tech.
The two other Texas schools that rank among the top 40 are Texas A&M University at College Station, No. 20, the nation’s top school for Christian music; and the University of Texas, Austin, which squeaked onto the list at No. 39. UT-Austin is the nation’s top school for rhythm and blues.
