Residents Losing Patience with Wellborn Road Work

BRAZOS COUNTY, Texas - Constant road repairs in the Wellborn area are testing the patience of many residents in the area.

A section of I & GN Road, just south of College Station, has been under repair since October of 2013. Brazos County Road and Bridge officials said they expect to finish up next moth, but now there’s another problem.

A culvert collapsed underneath Capstone Road over the weekend, forcing crews to make emergency repairs.

Brazos County Road and Bridge officials said a 20-year-old, 48-inch culvert collapsed, and there was a cavern adjacent to the roadway which presented a safety issue to the public. Crews have removed the corroded culvert, and are replacing it with new pipe.

For Wellborn residents like Vance Sherrod, who depend on I & GN Road to come and go, the road work on Capstone is a tough pill to swallow.

“They’re so close to finishing I-GN, and then they come up and tear up Capstone,” said Sherrod.

Sherrod said he understands when emergencies come up, but he wishes the County would let residents in the area know what’s going on.

“I wish they’d communicate with us,” said Sherrod. “If they’re going to close a road, let us know, so we can make plans for what we’re going to do.”

Alan Munger with the Brazos County Road and Bridge Department said Capstone should be back open by Thursday evening. Sherrod said that’s a promise he’s heard before.

“Basically, a culvert washed out on I & GN, and that was a year ago. And that road is still not open,” said Sherrod.

There are some in the area who have a slightly different opinion of the county’s work performance.

Patricia Lassiter lives near both I & GN and Capstone. She said she’s happy with how quickly crews got to work on Capstone.

“They noticed a huge problem where a car could get stuck, or a child could fall in, and they immediately dealt with it,” said Lassiter. “They’re trying to do the very best for all of us, and sometimes, that takes time.”
